Challenge:
SWCC faced significant challenges with the production and maintenance of piping couplings used in their systems. Traditional manufacturing methods resulted in long lead times, high costs, and frequent downtimes due to the need for replacements. The need for a more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective solution was critical to enhance operational reliability and reduce lead times.
Solution:
Namthaja proposed the use of 3D printed SS 316 piping couplings. The solution involved:
- Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM): The original piping coupling design was optimized for 3D printing to ensure high precision and performance. Design modifications were made to enhance durability and efficiency.
- Material Selection: SS 316 was chosen for its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and durability, making it ideal for the operational environment of the piping systems.
- 3D Printing Technology: The piping couplings were produced using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology, which allowed for rapid production and high accuracy.
- Increased Efficiency & Reliability: The new piping couplings significantly increased operational reliability and reduced downtime, improving the overall efficiency of the system.
- Cost Efficiency: Overall costs were reduced by eliminating the need for extensive logistics and large inventory holdings. The reduction in downtime and maintenance also contributed to significant cost savings.
